Paris fashion week: trends and styles proposed by French designers for the new spring-summer 2010 men’s collections

Having just reported from Milan fashion week on the latest trends proposed by Italian designers for their spring-summer 2010 men’s collections, we are now moving on to Paris, where two weeks ago, from June the 25th to June the 29th, the entire fashion world focused its attention on the collections presented by French designers at Paris fashion week.
paris-fashion-week-men-2010-spring-summer
Top French fashion labels such as Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermès and Yves-Saint Laurent  took part in this important event, introducing their vision of the men’s look for next summer: a man who, as we have already seen at Milan Fashion week, is confident of his good looks and charm and wants a look that is sexy and eye-catching.
The man portrayed by French designers pays attention to his look and his physique, setting off his toned body with carefully chosen clothing, enhancing his figure with high quality, perfect style.
His look is mainly characterized by the high quality of the fabrics used and by a particular care for details, especially in the accessories which should complement and enhance the man’s personality but not overshadow it. Everything is harmonious and perfectly put together.
Unlike some Italian designers who proposed gorgeous bright colors for spring-summer 2010 men’s clothing, both for day and evening wear, French fashion houses promote the use of subtle shades for next summer with a particular preference for white, ivory, light beige and light grey. Fabrics are fresh and comfortable, and can be shiny or matt, but should always be light in color. The French man, next spring-summer 2010 will be accompanied by his tote or shoulder bag, but this accessory is not as recurrent as in the Italian fashion collections where almost every model walked down the catwalk holding a large bag in his hand. French men’s bags are more like suitcases where he can keep everything he needs to have by his side, for work or travel or a pleasant week end. They are made of leather (if possible in a dark color) and the cut is classic but very refined. However, as said here above, many designers taking part in Paris fashion week, such as Christian Dior in his Dior Homme line, prefer the classic shoulder bag worn across the body or an elegant but wide shoulder bag worn on the shoulder with an elegant suit.

Which are the most innovative ideas and proposals which are going to distinguish the next season men’s wardrobe? In the second part of the article we will give you very detailed information regarding the following fashion houses, which in our opinion, best captured our attention: Yves Saint Laurent, Dior Homme, Hermes, Hugo, Kenzo, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Paul Smith, Louis Vuitton.

Spring Summer Fashion 2010 | Balenciaga Cruise

In his pre-spring summer collection 2010 for Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquière paid homage to the voluminous silhouettes and couture fabrics of house founder Cristóbal.

It was Balenciaga while nimbly straddling the masculine-feminine and urban-rustic divides. Trim leather jackets and pantsuits in men’s wear checks were softened with glossy silk blouses sprouting a ruffled collar or a bow at the waist, while balloon-sleeved utility parkas were animated with madras shirts that had thick neck ruffs. Rounding out this sophisticated and diverse collection were sleek and futuristic pantsuits in raw, jute-look silk, sculptural dresses with flaring crinoline skirts or cascading ruffles and a short guipure lace dress that evokes crochet and futuristic armor at the same time.

Women's 2009/2010 Autumn (Fall)/Winter

The fashion week runways for the Women's 2009/2010 Autumn (Fall)/Winter collections may be something truly different. In the midst of the economic crisis impacting the fashion industry one can expect smaller shows, fewer catwalks, more upcoming talent as opposed to big name models, and a general cut back in all areas.

And so it is that we dive into coverage of the Autumn (Fall)/Winter 2009/2010 catwalks with plenty of pictures from the runways of New York, Milan, Paris and London.

Shoes 2010-11

Mary-Kate Olsen wearing gladiator shoe fashion trend
the most common defining factor of feminine shoes is a high heel. In fact, there's always a challenge making flat-soled shoes feel sexy and girly, especially so when they're based upon a men's style. This pair of wing-tipped punched Oxford Brogues worn by Selma Blair tackles the problem in a different way: they may be distinctly masculine in style, but the pink laces add an element of fun and femininity. Gucci really rocked with a Russian-gypsy-meets-bohemian-babe type of feel. Part of the look was fringed boots - both ankle-height in suede, and over-the-knee in leather. And they weren't the only ones - Anna Sui and Balmain were also rocking fringed boots. But what do you think of Mischa's take on the folk-inspired fringed boot trend -

Somehow, Mischa Barton's Pocahontas style boots aren't quite evoking the same response as those on the Gucci runway.

overlay
Black lace inserts, a boned bodice and champagne-coloured chiffon for these lovely dresses, one long and one short. The short one has got a ruffled skirt decorated by horsehair.

obibow
Elaborate obi-like belts for these outfits. The first is a dress with bell sleeves, made of hand-painted white silk; the second is made of a short embroidered jacket with a fantastic bow belt, paired to simple shorts. The reference to Japanese culture is clear, since the obi is the traditional sash worn on kimonos and yukatas.
gold
Tulle and gold embroideries are the themes which both dresses have in common. The first seems to come out of a fairy-tale book: the skirt is a cloud of white tulle, while the bodice is decorated by gold embroideries and stiff ruffles. The second is a column dress, all embroidered in gold, with stiff ruffles on the bodice and on one shoulder.
Marchesa-Podium-spring-fashion-2010-006_runway
In Marchesa’s collections short dresses are not common, but the designers always try to include one or two. This one is amazing: I love the pale aqua colour of the chiffon bands and the gold embroideries.
nude
Nude tulle inserts distinguish these dresses. The first has the same colour as the short one: the bodice is made of embroidered lace, while the skirt is ruffled and pleated, so as to resemble sea foam. The second is made of lilac chiffon and is embroidered with a wisteria motif. Wisteria floribunda (the common wisteria) is a Japanese woody flowering branch, so this is another connection to Japanese culture.
glicine
Wisterias are embroidered in white and in lilac on these dresses. One is made of pale lilac silk, is strapless and has a short train, while the other is made of black silk with a tulle overlay, and has a single shoulder topped by a bow.
bows
The traditional Japanese art of paper folding – origami – is surely the primary inspiration behind the white silk decorations on these black dresses.
Marchesa-Podium-spring-fashion-2010-012_runway
This dress is peculiar because it combines a Grecian-like quality (the draped skirt), so Marchesa, to the origami art (the multiple fabric decorations on the shoulder).

ruffles
I love these dresses! They both have an intricate floral embroidery on tulle bodices and ruffled skirts. The first is truly a work of art: the ruffled long skirt blooms like an exotic flower and is reminiscent of similar effects seen in Giambattista Valli and Hussein Chalayan collections. The second dress is short and has feathers applied on the shoulders and on the skirt.
Marchesa-Podium-spring-fashion-2010-022_runway
Kirie is the Japanese art of paper cutting and has probably inspired Marchesa designers for this dramatic dress. The long skirt beautifully ends with stiff folds and is decorated by cut roses; the same decoration is on the bodice. This piece is so precious and original, I wonder who will be the first lucky celebrity to sport it on the red carpet.

Christian Louboutin

fuchsia
While the rest of the collection is all about neutrals, these two dresses are a nice pop of bright fuchsia. The second one has the themes of flat ribbons and folds.
Marchesa-Podium-spring-fashion-2010-010_runway
Folded organza ribbons are the incredible decorations for this dream-like dress, whose skirt is made of flat ruffles. I love the pale pink colour, utterly chic.
pumps
The uniqueness of the collection was completed by accordingly unique shoes, all creations by Christian Louboutin

Louboutin shoes

Louboutin shoes, but I have to admit this time he has surpassed himself. Most of the shoes have the same theme of the dresses – see the ruffles on the fuchsia sandals, or the embroideries and the flowers on the fuchsia and dove grey satin peep-toe pumps.
booties
When I first saw these booties, my heart stopped. Aren’t they absolutely gorgeous?

61st Primetime Emmy Awards

Several versions of the same peep-toe platform booties have been presented – in black or white patent leather, in white snake-like leather, with black or white ankle ribbons. They are perfect if paired to the stunning hand-painted stockings seen on the models.

The gorgeous Olivia Wilde was the first lucky celebrity to wear one of these dresses on the red carpet. She chose the stunning “sea foam” dress to step on the red carpet for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, on 20th September 2009. She is so beautiful and this dress gracefully enhances her beauty.
93405_olivia_wilde_2009_emmy_awards-3_122_117lo
The view of the dress from behind is breathless. I love how the back is completely naked (thanks to an insert of nude tulle), without being tacky. Olivia completed her outfit with simple hairstyle and make-up, diamond earrings and a Marchesa diamantè clutch

Maria Bonita Extra, a wonderful collection... I totally fell in love with all the sequined 'numbers' and also with the amazing colours and prints used.
Ps: Can someone please send me all of those items above?!?!?!?!

Cavendish, I really like the dresses in this collection, they are kind of Vivienne Westwood in the way they have been cut on the bias.

Melk Z-Da, the first dress, the grey one, is just something I MUST HAVE! Love the intricate construction of this garments. Loads of volume and sheer, is right up my street.

From 'Rio Moda Hype':

Ursula Felix, Absolutely loved the print on those amazing dresses, I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on her work!

Julia Valle, I felt very inspired for a DIY 'something' after seeing this picture.

Fernanda Yamamoto, I always love loads of volume and the second dress it's all made by glued fabrics like a collage, so inovative and beautiful.
